International Dance Festival
Cutting edge contemporary dance festival
History:
Started as one afternoon event to celebrate “World Dance day” April 29th by the encouragement of Unesco Bangkok , Culture unit in front of Emporium Shopping Center organized by Dance Centre, school of performing arts. The success of the first contemporary dance performance “ Six Thinking Hats” ( Dr. Edward De Bono ) Performed by the Company of Performing Artistes, Thailand and free public performances, dance/acrobatic workshops and creative activities for general public was overwhelm. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) became a venue partner since 2001 Benjasiri Park on Sukumvit rd. was the home of the festival for the first 10 years
The name of the festival changed from Dance Day Festival to The International Dance Festival in 2005.The festival grew from one afternoon to one month with 10-12 international acclaimed dance companies participated each year alongside 25-30 workshops and master classes conducted by guest choreographers offered to youth and local dance community. Since then The International Dance Festival is at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
Many young Thai choreographers and dance companies sprouted from ‘The Young Choreographer Showcase”. The audiences grew from hundreds to thousands. Thanks to all our cultural partners and supporters.
Our goals are:
to develop Thai youth to discover their own natural talent.
to support young talented and professional Thai artists.
to organize performances; master classes: workshop; seminars; exhibitions.
to introduce and promote performing arts to the general public.
to establish exchange programs with international institutions.
to network and collaborate with individual performing artists and arts organization.
Festival Framework
Featured in Each Venue:
Free Public Performances (10-15 minute performance Thai and International dance company: free event in public venue).
Main Performances: (private invitation “fund raiser” staged at special venues hosted by the Embassy and the friends-of-the-Arts foundation: 60 - 75 minute performance in total/ double bill: 35 minutes each group: triple bills: 25 minutes).
Young Choreographer Showcase: young talent invited to stage their work through selection process. Their work were supported fund from the foundation to each chosen choreographer.
Other Events
Master Classes: (special classes for experiences students and professionals artists).
Workshops: (open classes free of charge for all!) different disciples to be announced: taught by seasoned professionals).
Visual Arts Exhibitions: theme visual arts inspired by dance and movement
Street Acts: fun loving performing artist willing to show their craft as “buskers” traditional street performers
Talk and film by performing arts experts.
